Why does my PC feel slow even with lots of free space? We see this a lot: a laptop shows 100 % disk usage in Task Manager and the fan is screaming, yet the drive still reports plenty of free space. The culprit is usually hidden junk – temp files, old Windows Update caches, and forgotten apps that sit on the drive without you noticing. How do I safely clean Windows without risking my data? Do this, not that: Run the built‑in Disk Cleanup tool instead of a sketchy third‑party “junk remover”. Disk Cleanup knows which system files can be deleted, and it runs with the correct permissions. Open the Start menu, type Disk Cleanup and press Enter. Select your system drive (usually C:). Click “Clean up system files”. This adds Windows Update leftovers, old system restore points and temporary Windows files to the list. Check the boxes for “Temporary Internet Files”, “Recycle Bin”, “Temporary Windows setup files” and “Previous Windows installations” if they appear. Press OK, then Delete Files. We’d recommend this because it’s built into Windows, free, and it won’t remove your personal documents.
