Five signs your laptop hard drive is about to fail and what to do about it

We were halfway through a routine diagnostics when a frantic client burst into the workshop, laptop in hand, shouting that they’d just lost an hour of work after the screen froze and the fan roared like a jet engine. Is the laptop making strange noises? Yes – if you hear clicking, grinding or a persistent whine, the drive’s read/write heads are struggling. A healthy SSD is silent; a failing HDD often announces its demise with audible errors. When we hear that, we stop the machine immediately to avoid further damage. Is the system taking forever to boot or load programmes? Exactly – a hard drive that’s slowing to a crawl is a classic symptom. In Task Manager you’ll see the disk utilisation stuck at 100% even when you’re not doing anything. That constant max load means the platters are having trouble finding data quickly. Do you get frequent "disk error" or "cannot read from drive" messages? Those pop‑ups are the OS trying to tell you the drive can’t reliably retrieve sectors. Windows will often display “Windows detected a problem with your hard disk” during start‑up. We recommend backing up straight away when these warnings appear. Are there missing or corrupt files that you can’t open? When a drive starts to fail, sectors go bad and files become unreadable.
